Most don't even know this, and some simply don't care. Most people will save their money to buy a fairly nice piece of material to work on and when it comes time to display it, are content with setting it on a stand that is the wrong size, the wrong color, and the wrong shape. They buy whatever they find that will accommodate the tree, paying no attention to color, shape, height or gender. They are told that they will need a stand. They have reached a stage in their hobby in which they want to display their tree in a club show. I have found that most people buy a table for a tree because they have to. The tide is turning and that is a good thing! Many more people are commissioning pots for their trees, and I feel that stands will be a good market in the next 10 years due to increased knowledge that the internet has provided. To quote Al Keppler ("Buying a table "off the shelf" limits the owner to trees in their collection that fit the stand, rather than buying a stand of the proper dimensions that fit the tree. So why would we want to aggravate ourselves with table selection choices? and to find the pot to highlight or complement a feature of the bonsai. Trying to get the soil mix right for this tree, the branches to grow and stay where we want them to throughout the seasons, the right light for optimal and desired growth, water and other environmental conditions. A lot of us are still struggling with our trees to have them look like bonsai. They should be considered collectively towards the desired effect, as all these choices are interrelated.
